Immerse yourself in the world of original and exquisite Design at Timeless Art, where each piece is carefully selected for its unique charm and elegance.
This high-quality vintage life-size leather elephant, originating from France, is in beautifully worn condition, showcasing a unique patina from use, especially from children climbing on it. The elephant is depicted with its trunk raised, exuding a sense of movement and vitality. It features large original wooden tusks, contributing to its robust and impressive appearance.
The sculpture is extremely solid and stable, constructed from a combination of metal and wood, filled with straw and horsehair, and covered in a thick, high-quality dark brown leather skin. The incredible craftsmanship is evident in the detailed modeling and sculpting, and the elephant’s eyes are made of glass, adding to the realism.
The previous owner shared that the sculpture was specially made for the 1920 Paris World’s Fair as part of a custom order to decorate the stand of an Oriental carpet dealer selling Persian rugs. The dealer's stand was designed in an Eastern style, and the elephant was used to enhance the exotic atmosphere, symbolizing not only the exotic but also strength, loyalty, and perseverance. It is believed that other similar sculptures were created as part of this order. Additionally, the elephant was reportedly used in an exhibition in Brussels around 1935.
Dimensions: 210 cm height (to tip of trunk), 160 cm back height, 225 cm length (including tail), weight 120-140 kg.
