is regarded as one of the most creative, innovative and productive designers.
He is often referred to as the master of the chair.
During his lifetime, Wegner designed more than 500 chairs – many of which are today considered masterpieces.
Wegner belongs to the generation that is now referred to as the ‘Golden Age’ of modern Danish design. “Many foreigners have asked me how we created the Danish style,” Wegner once said.
“And I replied that it was rather a continuous process of purification, and for me of simplification, to arrive at the simplest possible elements of four legs, a seat, and a combined top rail and armrest.”
Wegner was born in southern Denmark in 1914, the son of a shoemaker.
He began his apprenticeship with the Danish master cabinetmaker H.F. Stahlberg when he was just 14 years old.
Three years later he moved to Copenhagen and attended the School of Arts and Crafts from 1936 to 1938.
