Murano glass dates back to the 8th century. By the 12th century, Venice had become renowned for its exquisite glass products. To keep the trade unique and profitable, a law was enacted in 1271 prohibiting the import of foreign glass and the employment of foreign glassmakers. In the 13th century, all glass production facilities were legally moved from Venice to Murano due to the fire risk posed by the ovens to the wooden structures of Venice. These laws helped ensure that Murano glass remains unique, crafted by artisans from a small Italian island group, with techniques passed down from father to son and master to apprentice.
